Are private medical certificates legally valid?
Yes, absolutely. Medical certificates issued by GMC-registered doctors (whether NHS or private) have equal legal standing. Employers, insurance companies, DVLA, and other authorities must accept private medical certificates. It is illegal for employers to refuse private fit notes or demand NHS certificates instead.
How quickly can I get a medical certificate?
We offer same day appointments, often within a few hours of booking. Your certificate is issued immediately at the end of your consultation - you'll receive a digital PDF copy via email and a physical certificate. There's no waiting period.
Can you backdate fit notes?
Yes, fit notes can be backdated within the doctor's clinical judgement. If you've been genuinely unwell but couldn't see a doctor immediately, we can backdate your fit note to cover the period of illness. However, this must be clinically appropriate and honest - we cannot fabricate past illness.
Do I need an appointment?
Yes, you need to book an appointment for all medical certificate consultations. You can book online at booking.lambertsportsclinic.co.uk/booking or call us on 0208 133 5694. We often have same day appointments available.
What do I need to bring to my appointment?
Bring photo ID (passport, driving licence, or ID card), any relevant medical records or hospital discharge letters, current medication lists, and any forms that need completing (e.g., D4 form for DVLA medicals, employer medical forms). If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them for DVLA medicals.
Can I get a fit note without being examined?
The doctor must conduct an appropriate clinical assessment before issuing a fit note. This may be a physical examination, medical history review, or consultation depending on your condition. Fit notes cannot be issued without any clinical assessment as this would be medical fraud.
How do I pay?
We accept card payments (credit/debit), cash, and bank transfer. Payment is due at the time of consultation. We provide receipts for all payments which you can submit for reimbursement if your employer covers private medical costs.

We're based in Surbiton and serve patients from Surbiton, Kingston upon Thames, New Malden, Tolworth, Worcester Park, Raynes Park, Wimbledon, Esher, Thames Ditton, and surrounding areas in South West London and Surrey. Our practice is easily accessible from Surbiton railway station.
What if I need additional copies of my certificate?
We can provide additional copies of your certificate if needed. Contact us and we can email PDF copies or print physical copies. There may be a small administrative charge for multiple copies issued after your consultation.
Can I get a medical certificate for a family member?
No, medical certificates must be issued following a direct consultation with the patient. You cannot obtain a certificate on behalf of someone else without them being present and examined. This applies to all medical certificates including fit notes and travel certificates.
