Iron infusion is suitable for patients with confirmed iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia. It is particularly appropriate for patients who have not responded to oral iron supplements, cannot tolerate iron tablets, have absorption issues (such as IBD or coeliac disease), or require rapid iron replacement. Suitability is assessed by our GP using your blood results before treatment is administered.

Yes. Blood test results are required before every iron infusion. Your GP must confirm iron deficiency from your results before treatment is given. This is a clinical requirement, not a formality — iron infusion is not appropriate unless your results indicate a genuine deficiency.

Blood test results must be from the last 30 days. Results older than 30 days cannot be used as they may not reflect your current iron status. If your results are out of date, we can arrange a blood test through our clinic before your infusion appointment.

Yes — if your blood test results are ready and less than 30 days old. Your consultation, blood results review and iron infusion all take place during the same appointment. There is no need for a separate consultation visit.

Every iron infusion at Lambert Medical Practice is performed by a GMC-registered UK GP. We do not use nurses or healthcare assistants to administer IV iron. Your GP conducts the full appointment — consultation, blood results review and the infusion itself.

Allow 1.5–2 hours for your first appointment. This includes your GP consultation and blood results review, the IV iron infusion (approximately 30–45 minutes) and a brief observation period before discharge. Most patients drive home and return to normal activities the same day.

Your appointment follows a clear clinical process. First, your GP reviews your blood test results and confirms suitability for treatment. A brief consultation follows, during which your GP discusses your symptoms and treatment plan. A small cannula is then inserted (similar to a blood test) and IV iron is delivered over approximately 30–45 minutes. You are monitored throughout. Once treatment is complete, a short observation period follows before you are discharged.

Reactions to IV iron are extremely rare. We use a clinically established preparation with one of the lowest reaction rates available, backed by extensive clinical data. A GMC-registered GP is present throughout your infusion and emergency medication is always on-site as standard.

Most patients notice a meaningful improvement in energy within 1–2 weeks. Full restoration of iron stores typically takes 4–6 weeks. A follow-up blood test at week 6 confirms that your levels have recovered as expected.
