About the treatment

What Is an Iron Infusion?

An iron infusion is the direct delivery of iron into the bloodstream through an intravenous (IV) drip. Unlike oral iron tablets — which must pass through the digestive system and are often poorly absorbed or cause side effects — IV iron bypasses the gut entirely, delivering therapeutic doses directly to where they are needed.

At Lambert Medical Practice, iron infusions are administered by a trained clinician in our Surbiton clinic. You are monitored throughout the procedure, which typically takes between 15 and 60 minutes depending on the formulation and dose required.

Why Might You Need an Iron Infusion?

Iron is essential for producing haemoglobin — the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body. When iron stores become severely depleted, the result is iron deficiency anaemia: fatigue, breathlessness, brain fog, pale skin, hair loss, and reduced exercise tolerance.

An iron infusion may be recommended when:

  • Oral iron tablets haven't worked or cannot be tolerated (nausea, constipation, stomach pain)
  • You have a condition affecting iron absorption — coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, gastric bypass
  • Iron levels need to be corrected quickly (post-partum anaemia, pre-operative optimisation)
  • You have chronic blood loss (e.g., heavy periods, chronic GI bleeding)
  • Your ferritin is critically low and oral supplementation is insufficient

What Happens at Your Appointment?

1
GP review — your GP reviews your recent blood results (ferritin, haemoglobin, transferrin saturation) and confirms suitability for IV iron
2
IV cannula insertion — a small cannula is placed in a vein, usually in the back of your hand or forearm
3
Infusion — iron solution is administered slowly over 15–60 minutes; you are monitored throughout for any reaction
4
Post-infusion observation — a brief period of monitoring before you leave; most patients drive themselves home
5
Follow-up blood test — arranged 4–8 weeks later to confirm ferritin and haemoglobin have normalised

Who Benefits From an Iron Infusion?

🩸
Heavy Periods

Chronic blood loss from menorrhagia is one of the most common causes of iron deficiency in women. An infusion rapidly replenishes stores lost each cycle.

🤰
Post-Partum Anaemia

Blood loss during childbirth frequently causes significant iron depletion. IV iron restores energy levels quickly in new mothers without the GI side effects of oral tablets.

🫁
Absorption Problems

Coeliac disease, Crohn's, ulcerative colitis, and gastric bypass surgery all reduce iron absorption. IV iron bypasses the gut entirely.

💊
Oral Iron Intolerance

Nausea, constipation, and stomach cramps cause many patients to stop oral supplements. An infusion delivers a full therapeutic dose in a single session.

🏃
Athletes & Fatigue

Endurance athletes frequently develop iron deficiency due to high demands. An infusion restores ferritin levels faster than oral supplementation, supporting performance and recovery.

🔪
Pre- or Post-Surgical

Optimising iron stores before planned surgery reduces risk of needing a blood transfusion. Post-operatively, IV iron corrects anaemia rapidly to support healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

An iron infusion is the intravenous (IV) delivery of iron directly into the bloodstream. It is used to treat iron deficiency anaemia when oral iron supplements have not worked, cannot be tolerated, or when iron stores need to be replenished rapidly. The infusion is administered over 15–60 minutes in clinic under medical supervision.

Iron infusions are suitable for patients with confirmed iron deficiency anaemia who have failed or cannot tolerate oral iron, those with conditions affecting absorption (coeliac disease, IBD), post-surgical or post-partum patients with significant iron depletion, and patients who require rapid correction of iron levels.

Most patients notice an improvement in energy levels and fatigue within one to two weeks. Full correction of iron stores (ferritin) typically occurs within four to eight weeks, confirmed by a follow-up blood test.

Yes. IV iron infusions are a well-established, clinically proven treatment. At Lambert Medical Practice they are administered by a trained clinician in a fully equipped clinical setting. You are monitored throughout. Serious adverse reactions are rare — mild reactions such as a temporary headache or flushing occasionally occur and are managed immediately in clinic.

No referral is needed. You can book directly with Lambert Medical Practice. You will need a recent blood test confirming iron deficiency — if you do not have one, we can arrange this at the same appointment.
