Why Parents Choose Our Gender Reveal Test

Find out your baby's gender weeks before your NHS 20-week scan. Start planning, bonding, and celebrating earlier.

Find Out Earlier

Discover your baby's gender from just 6 weeks pregnant — that's 14 weeks earlier than your NHS anomaly scan at 20 weeks. The excitement of finding out sooner means more time to bond with your baby, plan the nursery, choose names, and share the wonderful news with family and friends. Our highly sensitive DNA test works much earlier than ultrasound gender prediction, giving you those precious extra weeks of knowing.

Professional Medical Environment

Unlike DIY home testing kits, your blood sample is taken by our qualified phlebotomy nurse in our CQC registered medical clinic in Surbiton. We provide a professional, safe, and comfortable environment where you can ask questions and receive expert guidance. Our clinic meets the highest medical standards, and many expecting mothers bring their partners to share this special moment together. You're not just a customer — you're a patient receiving professional healthcare.

Accurate & Reliable

Our gender reveal blood test has an accuracy rate of over 99% when taken from 7 weeks pregnant. The test analyses cell-free fetal DNA circulating in your bloodstream, detecting Y chromosome markers. This scientific method is far more accurate than early ultrasound gender prediction and has been trusted by thousands of expecting parents across the UK. Results are processed in a UKAS accredited UK genomics laboratory to the highest standards, so you can have complete confidence in your result.

The Science Behind the Test — Safe, Accurate, Non-Invasive

Professional UK genomics laboratory analysing blood samples for gender reveal DNA testing

How Does the Gender Reveal Blood Test Work?

Our gender reveal blood test uses advanced DNA sequencing technology to determine your baby's gender from as early as 6 weeks pregnant. The science is fascinating and completely safe.

What the Test Detects

During pregnancy, tiny amounts of your baby's DNA circulate in your bloodstream. This is called cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA). Our highly sensitive test analyses your blood sample to detect the presence of Y chromosome markers.

Y chromosome detected = Boy No Y chromosome = Girl

Why It's So Accurate

The test has an accuracy rate of over 99% when taken from 7 weeks pregnant, making it far more reliable than early ultrasound gender prediction. The accuracy depends on having sufficient fetal DNA in your bloodstream, which increases as your pregnancy progresses. This is why we can test from 6 weeks, but accuracy is optimal from 7–8 weeks onwards.

Factors Affecting Accuracy

  • Gestational age: Accuracy improves after 7 weeks
  • Maternal BMI: Higher BMI may require slightly later testing (8–10 weeks)
  • Singleton pregnancy: Most accurate for single pregnancies
  • Previous pregnancies: May have residual DNA from male babies (we'll ask about this)

Laboratory Standards

Your sample is processed in a UKAS accredited UK genomics laboratory using the latest DNA sequencing technology. The lab processes thousands of prenatal tests annually and maintains the highest quality standards.

Completely Safe

This is a non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT). It's simply a blood test from your arm — exactly like any routine blood test you've had before. There is absolutely no risk to you or your baby. The technology has been used safely worldwide for over a decade.

Best ForFinding out as early as possible, accurate resultSeeing baby on screen, bonding experience

Both methods are safe and effective, but serve different purposes. Our gender blood test is ideal if you want to find out as early as possible (from 6 weeks) with maximum accuracy (99%+). The result is based on scientific DNA analysis rather than visual interpretation, so there's no chance of baby "hiding" the gender or technician error.

Many parents choose our blood test first for the accurate result, then book a private 3D/4D scan later (16–20 weeks) for the visual bonding experience of seeing their baby on screen. You don't have to choose one or the other — you can do both!

The NHS 20-week anomaly scan will also check gender if you ask, but that's quite late in pregnancy if you're eager to know sooner.

"We couldn't wait until the 20-week scan to find out! Being able to test at just 7 weeks was amazing. The whole experience at Lambert Medical Practice was professional and personal — the nurse was so lovely and made us feel comfortable. Results came back in exactly 2 days as promised. We're having a boy! Would absolutely recommend to any expecting parents who are as impatient as us!"

"I was nervous about the blood test as I don't like needles, but the nurse was brilliant and it was over in literally 30 seconds — completely painless. The clinic is spotless and professional. Got our results the very next day and we found out we're having a girl! So worth the £139 for the peace of mind of a proper medical clinic rather than a DIY home kit. Thank you Lambert Medical Practice!"
Rachel M., Wimbledon

"As a first-time mum I had loads of questions and the team were so patient explaining everything. The fact it's a proper CQC registered clinic gave us confidence. The price includes everything which was refreshing — no hidden extras like other places we looked at. Results were spot on (confirmed at our 20-week scan) and the whole process was smooth. Already recommended to two friends who are pregnant!"

Your Questions Answered

Everything you need to know about the gender reveal blood test

Our test can be taken from 6 weeks pregnant (calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period, or LMP). The test detects fetal DNA in your blood, which is present from early pregnancy. However, for optimal accuracy we recommend testing from 7–8 weeks, particularly if you have a higher BMI. If you're unsure of your dates, our team can help you calculate when the best time to test would be. The earlier in pregnancy, the less fetal DNA circulates in your blood, so waiting an extra week or two can improve accuracy significantly.

Our test is over 99% accurate when taken from 7 weeks pregnant. The test works by detecting Y chromosome markers in the cell-free fetal DNA present in your bloodstream. If the Y chromosome is detected, you're having a boy. If no Y chromosome is detected, you're having a girl. Accuracy increases with gestational age because more fetal DNA is present in your blood as pregnancy progresses. Factors that can affect accuracy include gestational age, maternal BMI, multiple pregnancies, and recent male pregnancies. We'll discuss your individual circumstances during your appointment.

Standard turnaround time is 2 working days from when the laboratory receives your sample. Next day results are available when your sample arrives at the lab before midday on a working day. Results are sent via secure email to the address you provide when booking. We'll also call you to notify you that results are ready and offer a complimentary phone consultation to discuss the result and answer any questions. Most samples sent from our clinic arrive at the lab the next working day (via Royal Mail Tracked 24).

Our all-inclusive £139 price includes: the gender reveal blood test itself, professional nurse blood draw in our CQC registered clinic (not DIY home collection), all postage and packaging via Royal Mail Tracked 24 service, laboratory analysis at our partner UK genomics facility, secure email results delivery, detailed results explanation document, complimentary phone consultation to discuss your results, and you can bring your partner or support person at no extra cost. There are absolutely no hidden fees — £139 is the total price from start to finish.

Our Complete Pre-Natal Care Package (£299, save £60) includes everything in the standalone test PLUS: a pre-natal physiotherapy session (45 minutes, £55 value) to address back pain, pelvic floor preparation, and postural advice; a nutritionist assessment (60 minutes, £90 value) with personalised nutrition plan and prenatal vitamin optimisation; and a GP appointment (30 minutes, £65.99 value) for comprehensive pregnancy health check and expert medical guidance. The total value is £359.99, but you pay just £299 — saving £60.99. It's perfect for first-time mothers who want comprehensive early pregnancy support.

Yes, the gender reveal blood test is completely safe for both you and your baby. It's a simple blood draw from your arm — exactly like any routine blood test you've had before. It's a non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT), meaning there are no needles near your bump, no procedures, no risks. The test analyses DNA that's already naturally circulating in your bloodstream. The technology has been used safely worldwide for over a decade with millions of tests performed. There is zero risk to your pregnancy.

In rare cases (less than 1% of tests), there may be insufficient fetal DNA in your blood sample to give a conclusive result. This is more common in very early pregnancy (before 7 weeks), in mothers with higher BMI, or if the sample was compromised during transport. If this occurs, we offer a completely free retest after 2 weeks. The waiting period allows more fetal DNA to accumulate in your bloodstream. Second tests very rarely come back inconclusive. We'll support you throughout the process and explain everything clearly.

While our test has over 99% accuracy, no medical test is 100% perfect. Incorrect results are extremely rare but can occur due to: insufficient fetal DNA in the sample, maternal health conditions affecting DNA, recent loss of a male fetus, rare genetic conditions, laboratory processing errors (very rare), or administration of certain medications. This is why we recommend confirming the gender at your NHS 20-week scan. However, the vast majority of our tests are completely accurate and later confirmed at ultrasound scans.

No referral is needed! This is a private service available to any pregnant woman from 6 weeks onwards. Simply book directly through our website or call us on 0208 133 5694. You don't need permission from your GP, midwife, or anyone else. However, if you have any medical conditions or complications in your pregnancy, we recommend discussing with your healthcare provider first, though this rarely affects the test.

The test works for twin pregnancies, but with limitations. If at least one baby is male, the test will detect the Y chromosome and indicate "male DNA detected" — but it cannot tell you if both twins are boys, or if you have one boy and one girl. If no male DNA is detected, both twins are girls. For more detailed gender information with twins, a private ultrasound scan from 16 weeks is more informative. Contact us to discuss your twin pregnancy and we'll explain your options.

No special preparation is needed! You don't need to fast, avoid any foods or drinks, or change your routine. Just arrive at your scheduled appointment time. We recommend: wearing clothing that allows easy access to your upper arm for the blood draw (short sleeves or loose sleeves that roll up easily), bringing photo ID, staying hydrated (drink plenty of water beforehand — this makes the blood draw easier), and bringing your partner or a support person if you'd like company.

We only need one small tube of blood — approximately 10ml (about two teaspoons). It's exactly the same amount taken for routine pregnancy blood tests. The blood draw takes less than a minute and is performed by our qualified phlebotomy nurse. If you're nervous about needles, please let us know — we can talk you through it and make you as comfortable as possible. Most patients say it's completely painless and much easier than they expected.

You can book your appointment anytime from 6 weeks pregnant onwards, though we recommend 7–8 weeks for optimal accuracy. If you're not sure how many weeks pregnant you are, we can help you calculate this from the first day of your last menstrual period. Many parents book as soon as they find out they're pregnant! We have flexible appointment times including early mornings, evenings, and Saturdays to fit your schedule. We often have appointments available within 2–3 days of booking.

Absolutely! We encourage partners to attend. This is an exciting moment in your pregnancy journey and many couples want to be together when taking the test. There's no extra charge for your partner to attend. The appointment takes about 15 minutes in total including paperwork, the blood draw (5 minutes), and answering any questions you have. Some couples make it a special date — come to the appointment, then go for lunch and start planning for your little boy or girl!

Results are sent via secure email to the address you provide when booking. The email will contain a PDF document clearly stating your result (Boy or Girl), the scientific explanation of how this was determined, the confidence level of the result, and information about fetal DNA testing. We'll also call you when results are ready to offer a complimentary phone consultation. During this call, we can answer any questions, explain the science in more detail, and even discuss ideas for your gender reveal party if you're planning one!

How exciting! Many of our patients plan gender reveal parties for family and friends. We can accommodate this in several ways: 1) We can send results in a sealed envelope (you open it at the party), 2) You can give us your party planner's contact details and we'll send results directly to them, 3) We can provide the result in a special format for reveal boxes, balloons, or cakes. Just let us know when you book and we'll make arrangements. We love being part of your special celebration!

Yes, Lambert Medical Practice is fully registered with and regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the independent regulator of health and social care in England. Our CQC registration demonstrates that we meet fundamental standards of quality and safety. We maintain high standards of: safe care, effective care, caring for patients, responsive services, and well-led management. You can verify our CQC registration and view our latest inspection report on the CQC website.

The NHS offers various blood tests during pregnancy, but the routine NHS tests check your health, blood group, infections, and genetic conditions — they don't determine your baby's gender. The NHS 20-week anomaly scan can reveal gender if you ask, but this is quite late in pregnancy (20 weeks). Our private gender reveal test allows you to find out from just 6 weeks pregnant — 14 weeks earlier than the NHS scan — giving you much more time to bond, plan, and prepare. It's a completely different test from NHS screening.
