Why B12 Injections Are More Effective Than Tablets

Vitamin B12 is essential for red blood cell formation, nerve function, DNA synthesis, and energy metabolism. Yet oral B12 supplements — even high-dose tablets or sprays — have a fundamental limitation: absorption. Standard oral B12 is absorbed at a rate of just 1–5% from the digestive tract. A 1,000 mcg tablet may deliver as little as 10–50 mcg to your cells.

An intramuscular B12 injection delivers the full dose directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the gut entirely. Absorption is effectively 100%. The result is faster, more reliable correction of deficiency and a more immediate effect on symptoms including fatigue, brain fog, mood, and nerve function.

Who Should Have a B12 Injection?

Vitamin B12 deficiency is more common than most people realise — and often goes undetected for years. You may benefit from a B12 injection if you are:

  • Vegan or vegetarian — B12 is found almost exclusively in meat, fish, dairy, and eggs. Plant-based diets provide little to no B12, and deficiency is extremely common without supplementation or injection.
  • Over 60 — the stomach produces less intrinsic factor with age, significantly impairing B12 absorption from food and oral supplements.
  • Experiencing fatigue, brain fog, low mood, or tingling limbs — classic symptoms of B12 deficiency that are frequently overlooked or attributed to other causes.
  • Taking metformin — long-term metformin (for type 2 diabetes) depletes B12 levels by interfering with absorption.
  • Taking PPIs or acid suppressants — omeprazole and similar medications reduce stomach acid needed for B12 absorption from food.
  • Diagnosed with pernicious anaemia or absorption disorders — where oral supplementation is clinically insufficient.

The Treatment

A B12 intramuscular injection takes approximately 15 minutes from arrival to departure. Our GP will conduct a brief assessment before administering hydroxocobalamin or cyanocobalamin (the standard forms used in clinical practice) into the upper arm or gluteal muscle. The injection itself takes seconds; most patients describe it as a mild pressure.

For deficiency correction, an initial loading course (typically 3–6 injections over 2–3 weeks) may be recommended, followed by maintenance injections every 4–12 weeks. For wellness and energy support, many patients opt for monthly injections.

B12 Injection vs IV Therapy

B12 is available both as a standalone IM injection (£40) and as a component of our IV drip formulas. For most patients, the IM injection is the most efficient and cost-effective route. If you are also interested in other nutrients — such as Magnesium, Vitamin C, L-Carnitine, or NAD+ — our IV therapy drips combine multiple ingredients in a single session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, significantly. Oral B12 supplements have an absorption rate of just 1–5%. An IM injection delivers 100% directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the gut entirely. For anyone with absorption issues, pernicious anaemia, or vegans/vegetarians, injections are clinically superior.

For maintenance, every 4–12 weeks depending on your symptoms and blood levels. For active deficiency, a loading course of 3–6 injections over 2–3 weeks is typically recommended. Our GP will advise the right schedule for you.

A B12 injection costs £40 at Lambert Medical Practice in Surbiton. This includes the GP assessment and administration. Book online or call 0208 133 5694.
