Fit to Travel Certificate for Travel Insurance: What You Need to Know

Many travel insurers require a GP to confirm that a pre-existing condition is stable before they will cover it. A fit-to-travel certificate is the document that makes this possible — and can be obtained quickly at Lambert Medical.

What is a Fit-to-Travel Certificate?

A fit-to-travel certificate (sometimes called a fit-to-fly letter for air travel) is a letter from a registered GP confirming that a patient is medically fit to travel. It is based on a clinical assessment at your appointment and states relevant facts about your health in relation to your planned trip.

Travel insurers use this document to assess whether a pre-existing condition is sufficiently stable to be included in cover, or as supporting evidence for a medical claim.

When is a Fit-to-Travel Certificate Required?

Common situations include:

  • Pre-existing conditions: Your insurer may require confirmation that a condition is stable and managed before providing cover for it on a new or existing policy.
  • Recent illness or surgery: If you are travelling within weeks of a hospital admission, operation, or significant medical event, your insurer may require a letter confirming it is safe to travel.
  • Pregnancy: Airlines typically require documentation after 28 weeks; insurers may require confirmation of a complication-free pregnancy.
  • Visa requirements: Some countries require evidence of medical fitness as part of a long-stay visa or permit application.

What the Certificate Confirms

A fit-to-travel certificate is based on your GP's clinical assessment. It typically confirms:

  • Your current medical condition(s) and treatment
  • That the condition is stable and well-controlled
  • That you are medically fit to travel to your destination for your planned duration
  • Any relevant medical notes for the trip — medications carried, special assistance needs

The certificate is only as accurate as the clinical assessment allows. If you have had recent investigations, bring the results with you. If you have relevant hospital letters, bring those too.

Always declare pre-existing conditions to your insurer. Failure to do so is a legal obligation under the Consumer Insurance (Disclosure and Representations) Act 2012. Non-disclosure may invalidate your policy and lead to claims being rejected, even for unrelated events.

What is Not Covered by a Fit-to-Travel Certificate

A fit-to-travel certificate confirms fitness to travel based on information available at the appointment. It does not:

  • Guarantee that your insurer will provide cover (this is a commercial decision by the insurer)
  • Substitute for a MEDIF form if your airline has initiated a formal MEDA clearance process
  • Cover conditions that were not disclosed to or assessed by the GP at your appointment

Frequently Asked Questions

You may need one when your insurer requires confirmation of a stable pre-existing condition, when travelling shortly after illness or surgery, when in late pregnancy, or when a visa application requires evidence of medical fitness. Contact your insurer before booking your appointment to confirm exactly what they need.

It confirms your current condition(s) and treatment, that the condition is stable and well-controlled, and that you are medically fit to travel to your intended destination for the planned duration. It may also include notes on medications or special assistance requirements.

Yes — this is a legal requirement under UK consumer insurance law. Non-disclosure can invalidate your policy. If your insurer requires confirmation of stability before providing cover, they will request a fit-to-travel certificate.

No. A fit-to-travel certificate is a GP letter for insurance documentation. A MEDIF is a structured airline form for formal airline clearance. If your airline requires MEDIF, a GP letter is not a substitute. Lambert Medical can assist with both — clarify which you need before your appointment.
